WhatsApp API: what it is and how to get it.
The WhatsApp API (WhatsApp Business Platform) is how a business connects its number to its own systems to serve, sell and collect payments at scale, beyond what the regular app allows: it's what powers the AI agent, the CRM and campaigns that reach thousands of customers.
What the WhatsApp API is for
The WhatsApp Business app works for a business with one phone and one person behind it. The WhatsApp API is different: it connects your business number to your own systems, so an AI agent, a CRM or a message campaign can write and read that conversation without anyone having to open the app by hand.
It's for serving customers at any hour without a person watching the phone, for keeping every conversation saved and organized by customer, for sending promotions to thousands of contacts with templates approved by Meta, and for collecting payment inside the same chat instead of sending the customer somewhere else.
For a small business, the API means never missing a conversation even when no one is in front of the phone at that hour. For a bigger one, it means sales, service and payments share one place instead of living scattered across tools that don't talk to each other.
- An AI agent that answers around the clock with your business's own knowledge.
- A funnel board where you see and move every conversation, not just a loose chat.
- Message campaigns that reach thousands of contacts with templates reviewed by Meta.
- Payments inside the conversation, with no need to send the customer to a separate link.
How the app differs from the WhatsApp API
Both run on the same WhatsApp, but they fit businesses of a different size.
| WhatsApp Business app | WhatsApp API | |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs it | One person, from their phone | Your systems: the AI agent, the CRM, the campaigns |
| How many conversations at once | As many as one person can read and answer | Thousands, in parallel, with no one left waiting |
| Mass messages | Broadcast lists, capped and with no templates | Segmented campaigns with templates approved by Meta |
| Customer history and data | Stays on the phone of whoever answers | Lives in a per-customer profile anyone on the team can see |
| Connects to your systems | No | Yes: CRM, catalog, payments and the rest of your business |
The WhatsApp API that exists today: the Cloud API
Meta calls Cloud API the version of the WhatsApp API it hosts itself: your business doesn't need to stand up or maintain anything of its own, everything runs on Meta's infrastructure and your provider connects there.
There used to be another version, the On-Premises API, which ran on the business's own server. Meta phased it out: the last supported version stopped working on October 23, 2025, so today the only door into the WhatsApp API is the Cloud API.
That simplifies moving to the API: there's no longer a choice between hosting it yourself or leaving it to Meta, and no separate server to maintain just for WhatsApp. Since it runs on Meta's infrastructure, activating it doesn't depend on buying a server or building a technical team to maintain one; Meta and your provider do that work, you just connect the number.
How to activate the WhatsApp API step by step
- 01
Set up your business portfolio in Meta.
Everything runs through a Meta Business portfolio: if you don't have one, it's created in the same step where you connect your number.
- 02
Verify your business.
Verifying your business with Meta helps your messaging limits grow faster as you send good-quality messages.
- 03
Connect the number and set a display name.
You register your business number and choose the name that will show in WhatsApp in place of the number, so the customer recognizes you right away.
- 04
Do it through a Meta Business Partner.
With a partner like Elocuenti you connect in one click: you accept Meta's terms, pick or create your portfolio and register the number from the same guided dashboard, instead of building every step yourself.
- 05
Keep using the app on the same number.
Coexistence keeps your number running the API and the WhatsApp Business app at the same time, so your team doesn't lose the habit of replying from the phone.
How much the WhatsApp API costs
Meta charges for the WhatsApp API per template delivered, not for using it or for replying to a customer who wrote to you: that reply, within the first 24 hours, costs nothing. What is charged is every marketing template, utility templates that go out outside that window, and authentication templates on every delivery.
The exact rate varies by the customer's country and by how much you send in a month, so there's no single price to give: Meta's official rate card, organized by category and country, is the real reference.
On top of what Meta charges per template, the provider you connect the API through charges for its own service: with Elocuenti it's a base price in US dollars for a monthly quota of conversations, and only marketing campaign templates are billed separately.

Twilio is a well-known messaging provider; Elocuenti is a conversational platform built on the same official API.
| Messaging provider | Conversational platform (e.g. Elocuenti) | |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | The technical connection to the WhatsApp API | The API connection plus the AI agent, CRM and campaigns already built |
| Who builds the agent that replies | Your own team | It comes ready-built, loaded with your business's knowledge |
| Campaigns and segmentation | Built separately, message by message | Included in the same dashboard, with templates and a control group |
| Payments in the conversation | Not part of the service | Available in Colombia with Elopay, inside the same chat |
| Who it suits best | A business with its own team to build everything on top | A business that wants the result without building it from scratch |
What you can build on the WhatsApp API
An AI agent that handles it alone
It answers with your business's own knowledge, understands voice notes and images, and hands off to a person with full context when needed.
A CRM by funnel
Every conversation lives on a stage board, and the AI moves the customer from one stage to the next and explains why.
A profile per customer
A single profile fills itself in from what the customer says in chat and from your other connected systems.
Campaigns that reach thousands
Segmented messages, with templates approved by Meta and a control group to measure what actually converts.
Payments in the conversationAvailable in Colombia
In Colombia, with Elopay you send a payment link, a QR code or a Bre-B key, and the payment confirms inside the same chat.
Managing it by conversation
You connect Elocuenti's MCP to Claude or ChatGPT and configure the agent, campaigns or contacts by talking, not by clicking through a dashboard.
