WhatsApp Business API pricing: 2026 guide.

Since July 1, 2025, Meta charges for the WhatsApp Business API per message: you only pay for each template delivered, at a rate set by its category (marketing, utility or authentication) and the recipient's country. Replying to a customer who messaged you within 24 hours is free.

How Meta charges for the WhatsApp Business API

Until June 2025, Meta charged per conversation: every 24-hour window with a customer had a price. Since July 1, 2025 it charges per message, and only for one kind of message: templates.

A template is a message Meta approves before you send it, and it is the only way to write to a customer who hasn't messaged you in the last 24 hours: a promotion, an order confirmation or a verification code. Regular messages, the ones you send to reply, are not charged.

Template categories and when they are charged

Every template is approved in a category, and the category decides whether it is charged and how much.

CategoryWhat it's forWhen it's charged
MarketingPromotions, offers, launches and cart recoveryAlways, on every delivery
UtilityOrder confirmations, shipping updates and payment remindersFree inside the 24-hour window; charged outside it
AuthenticationVerification and login codesCharged per delivery, with volume discounts

What changes the rate

Current rates by country are on Meta's official rate card, at business.whatsapp.com.

  • The template category: marketing costs more than utility or authentication.
  • The recipient's country, by their phone number's country code: the same template costs differently in the US, Mexico, Colombia or Spain.
  • Volume: utility and authentication get cheaper in tiers as you send more in the month, per country.
  • Currency: Meta bills in US dollars, euros, Mexican pesos, Colombian pesos and other local currencies.

How to estimate your monthly API cost

  1. 01

    Count your templates.

How many you send a month, by category and by your customers' country.

  2. 02

    Subtract the free ones.

Replies, utility inside the window and anything sent within the 72 hours after an ad.

  3. 03

    Multiply by the rate.

The one for each category and country, on Meta's rate card.

  4. 04

    Add the platform.

What the provider you use the API through charges, which is a separate cost.

The other cost: the platform

The API is used through a provider connected to Meta, and each one charges differently. Many charge per message, so every reply adds to the bill even when Meta doesn't charge for it.

With Elocuenti you pay one base price a month with a quota of conversations: each customer the AI talks to in your monthly cycle counts once, whether they write once or fifty times. Only marketing campaign templates, which Meta charges per send, are billed separately.

How to pay less for the WhatsApp API

  • Reply within 24 hours: while the window is open, replying is free.
  • Use click-to-WhatsApp ads: they open 72 hours of free messages.
  • Send utility messages while the window is open: a confirmation inside the 24 hours is not charged.
  • Segment your campaigns: every marketing template is charged, whether the customer reads it or not.
  • Measure against a control group and cut the campaigns that don't sell.
Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about WhatsApp API pricing

Does replying to a customer on WhatsApp cost anything?

Not for Meta: if the customer messaged you, your replies within the next 24 hours are free. What the platform provider charges depends on its plan.

Since when does Meta charge for the API per message?

Since July 1, 2025. It used to charge per 24-hour conversation; now it charges for each template delivered, by category and the recipient's country.

Does the WhatsApp Business app cost anything?

The app is free. What costs money is the API, which is what chatbots, AI agents and template campaigns use.

What is a conversation, and how is it billed?

Most platforms charge per message, so every reply adds to the bill. With Elocuenti you pay one base price a month with a quota of active conversations. A conversation is each customer the AI talks to in your monthly cycle: whether they write once or fifty times, it counts once. Only marketing campaign templates, which Meta charges per send, are billed separately.

Can I keep using the WhatsApp Business app?

Yes. You connect your number in one click and can keep using the WhatsApp Business app on that same number.

Pay for conversations, not messages.
